Saint Andrews – The residents of the Passamaquoddy Lodge are about to enjoy the smooth, sweet taste of soft serve ice cream thanks to the generous gifts from the Kiwanis Club of St. Andrews and the Bergmann Charitable Gift Fund during our Annual Fundraising Campaign.

“Our residents have their spoons at the ready,” says Yolande Jay, Administrator at the Passamaquoddy Lodge nursing home in Saint Andrews, “The machine has arrived, our staff is being educated on how to operate it and will soon be serving the ice cream treat. Its something we’ve been wanting for years.” The purchase of the soft serve ice cream machine was made possible through the donations made to this year’s Fundraising Campaign. To date, the campaign has raised nearly $44,000 with promises of more donations to arrive soon. “To everyone who has donated and are about to donate, we are truly thankful.”

“This year, we had a number of items on our fundraising wish list,” said Jay, “including the soft serve ice cream machine, four Broda chairs, and two food delivery carts.” The monies raised has not only paid for the ice cream machine, but two of the Broda chairs are already in use and there is hope that with future donations, the very expensive food delivery carts may be purchased. The Broda chairs are wheel chairs that are engineered with patient safety and ergonomic support in mind and the food carts would deliver food at the desired hot or cold temperature and the highest food safety standards. While essential to resident comfort and safety, neither of these items are paid for by the government.

“We rely on the generosity of donors to supply many of the ‘extras’ required for our residents,” said Gary Groom, chair of the Passamaquoddy Lodge Foundation, “and the campaign has once again renewed our faith in those who support the Lodge – we could not offer the residents the life they deserve without their generosity.”

The campaign also generated $6,000 toward the “New Build Fund”. With the election of the new government and the continued support of our local MLA Kathy Bockus and Mayor Brad Henderson, the Passamaquoddy Lodge Building Committee hopes to be able to announce the next step in the development stage soon, said Groom.
